Over the course of the two days, teams of students, entrepreneurs, researchers, developers, users, jobseekers and experts in space technology will be faced with a challenge designed by CNES which they will have to solve in just 24 hours. CNES and its partners hope to encourage people to set up their own businesses; they are also on the lookout for people likely to join ESA BIC Southern France. The business centre encourages technology transfers from the space sector to the non space-related sector and helps selected companies to develop, under its responsibility.
The event is the first of its kind in France. It is designed to consolidate the dynamic image of the space sector, increase awareness of ESA BIC Southern France initiatives and show that this sector can be a source of innovation for employment and economic development in both the space and other sectors.
The innovations of CNES and its partners will be showcased during these two days.
The work undertaken by the groups will be displayed in the form of models, presentations and computer developments using space-related data or technologies. The projects must be innovative, include a credible economic model and offer real prospects for value creation in terms of new jobs.
The award ceremony will take place on 1 July 2014 at the gala evening during the Toulouse Space Show.

1) ESA BIC Sud France, which was set up in 2013, is the European Space Agency’s first Business Incubation Center (there are already eight others elsewhere in Europe). It is run by the Aerospace Valley business cluster with CNES and the Pégase business cluster. It has five business clusters in Aquitaine, Midi-Pyrénées and PACA viz. Technopole Bordeaux Technowest, ESTIA Entreprendre, Incubateur Midi-Pyrénées, Théogone and Incubateur PACA-Est. It encourages new business start-ups and has as its objective the creation of 75 start-ups in five years. The businesses either have to work with space data or transfer technology from the space sector to other fields. Further information: www.esa-bic.fr
2) Hackathon is an event organised by NASA and related to the space sector. During it, developers join forces on cooperative computer programming over several days.
